Three Pets Must Die?

After buying three pets, Rerlas says to come back again later, and he may have more. In my experience, no matter how long I wait, he never starts selling more of that pet again. The only way he will sell me pets 4-6 is if all three of the ones I already bought die. You'd think that, if just one died, he'd be willing to sell one more, but it doesn't work that way when I test it. It's only when all three die that he will start selling me the final three.
