Quick Walkthrough[edit]

  1. A challenger appears.
  2. Meet the challenger.
  3. Accept or refuse the challenge.
  4. Kill the challenger or flee.

Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

Once you have a high level of skill in any magic school, upon entering a habitable location or exiting an inn after sleeping, a challenger may appear and challenge you to a duel. Regardless of your answer, a combat ensues, however if you try to back out by saying "sorry", any nearby guards will help you with your duel.

Notes[edit]

  • If you do not use magic to fight the mage, he will taunt you by saying: "This is a mage's duel. You know magic!"
  • This can lead to expulsion from the College of Winterhold, but there is a rejoin quest available. [verification needed — "This" quest or "This" note? (the first note)]
  • If any of your companions join in on the duel, he will order them to stop, explaining that it is supposed to be a one-on-one duel. This does not seem to affect the quest in any way, and companions will not abide to his demands. The same happens if other NPCs nearby are hit by his spells.

Bugs[edit]

  • If you enter another cell while fighting against the Challenger, you will lose their location and be unable to finish the mini-quest.
  • If you fight him with conjured weapons, the Challenger will taunt you as if you weren't fighting him using magic.

Notes
  • Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g., <Alias=LocationHold>) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game.
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage WIChangeLocation03 stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest using resetquest WIChangeLocation03.
