Gralnach

Gralnach is a Nord child that lives at Heartwood Mill with his mother Grosta. His father, Leifnarr, recently disappeared and Gralnach is understandably upset, although not as upset as his mother.

He sleeps in the house every night between midnight and 6am and starts the day with a one-hour breakfast. While his mother works the mill alone, he spends the day fooling around the courtyard. At 1pm and 7pm he pauses for one-hour meals.

He wears child's clothes with shoes. He carries a selection of food and toys and a small amount of gold.

If his mother is killed, Gralnach will move to the Honorhall Orphanage in Riften, where he is adoptable.

Dialogue

"It's just me and my mother at the mill here. My father is gone. We don't know what happened to him."

"I hope you're not here to start some trouble. I'll fight you if I have to."

"My mother taught me the millwork trade... you know, which trees to cut and which ones to pass up."

"Someday I'll take over the mill... when I'm old enough."

"I'm not afraid of anyone. Put a sword in my hand and I could defend this place if I had to!"

"Millwork sure is boring, but at least I don't have to work in a nasty mine."

"I can't believe my mother's gone. Now what'll I do?" (If Grosta is dead)

"I knew it! I knew my father was a hero and he didn't just run away." (After the quest Flight or Fight)

Conversations

"Gralnach! I told you not to go through your father's things!"

With his father gone, Gralnach takes responsibility and helps his mother out:

Gralnach: "Mother, I finished cutting at the northern stand. Where do I move on to now?"

Grosta: "There is a copse of elms to the east. We could really use that wood."

Gralnach: "I was hoping to head into Riften for supplies, but I can do that after I'm done with the elms."

Grosta: "Just be careful, Gralnach. That copse doesn't look safe. If you see any trouble, you run right home."

Grosta thinks her husband ran off with another woman. A conversation inside the house shows how she handles it:

Grosta: "Gralnach! I told you not to go through your father's things!"

Gralnach: "I'm sorry mother, I just want to know more about him. You never tell me anything!"

Grosta: "That's because there's nothing to tell. He left us to fend for ourselves and that's all you need to know."

Gralnach: "I wish you didn't hate him so much... I wish the whole family could be together again."

After the quest is completed, the conversation will take a slightly different tone:

Grosta: "Gralnach! I told you not to go through your father's things!"

Gralnach: "I'm sorry mother, now that he's dead, I just want to know everything I can about him."

Grosta: "He was a wonderful man, and he loved us very much. I'm sorry I yelled at you."

Gralnach: "It's okay, mother. I understand."

Bugs

• He does not go indoors at night with his mother, and will often be found standing around outside the house doing nothing.
  • The Unofficial Skyrim Patch, version 2.0.7, fixes this bug.
