Thoronir

Thoronir is a Wood Elf trader and proprietor of The Copious Coinpurse in the Market District of the Imperial City. He sells general goods, and has the best prices in town, but his sources may be somewhat unsavory... You can buy the unique Imperial Breeches from him only. He also sells the rare weightless shirt with suspenders. If he dies, his body never disappears.

Like the other merchants in the district, Thoronir lives a life of hard work and very little spare time. He sleeps in the private quarters above his shop every night between midnight and 6am. After waking up, he heads downstairs and eats his breakfast in the main trading room. At 8am, he unlocks the doors and spends the next twelve hours offering his services to the occasional customer. At 8pm, he closes up shop and leaves. On Morndas, Middas and Fredas he will go to the Merchants Inn and enjoy both his dinner and the company of the other traders. On Tirdas, Turdas and Loredas he heads for an evening stroll around the city's popular Arboretum and on Sundas, he goes to the Temple of the One for an evening prayer. He always heads back to his shop and finds his bed at midnight.

He wears a selection of middle-class clothing consisting of a pair of burgundy linens, a quilted doublet and doeskin shoes. He carries around his shop key and a large sum of gold.

Related Quests[edit]

Dialogue[edit]

When you meet him for the very first time, he will say:

"What kind of deal can I make for you today?"
Imperial City
"I have the best prices in town? Why? I'm smart, and you're smart. We know the right people, we get the best deals."

He ends conversation with:

"Goodbye. Please, come again."

Rumors[edit]

Citizens of the capital will comment on how Thoronir can move almost any good, though they dislike his approach:

"Thoronir will buy almost anything. And I mean anything."
"If you need to get rid of something quickly, check out the Copious Coinpurse."
"Thoronir isn't too picky, which is nice."
"Thoronir is quite a character. He's dirty and underhanded, but he provides a service."

Denizens of the Imperial City can also be heard asking each other:

"Do you ever go to the Copious Coinpurse?"
"Have you ever done any shopping at Thoronir's store?"

To which others will reply:

"I've sold some things there. Thoronir is an odd one."
"If you can get used to Thoronir, you can find some good deals there."

Quest-Related Events[edit]

The complaints about his business practices will become more pointed when you greet some of his fellow merchants:

Claudette Perrick: "I have everything for the budding alchemist under one roof. Far more than Thoronir would ever have, despite his horrid business ethics."
Ogier Georick: "Finally! A new customer! Please... look around. Just promise me you won't buy from that fetcher, Thoronir."
Tertullian Verus: "Say, you look like someone that could help us out. Having a bit of trouble with another merchant in town who goes by the name Thoronir."

If you inquire further they will explain:

Claudette Perrick: "That guy is going to run me out of business soon. His prices are so low, I don't know how he does it. I think he's up to something. If you're interested, you should head over to Jensine's 'Good as New' Merchandise. She heads up a committee that is trying to investigate him."
Ogier Georick: "I cringe whenever that name is mentioned. His inventory has to be stolen or something, because his prices are so low, they're below my cost. At this rate, I don't know if I can keep my doors open. All the people are spending their money there. Bah. If you want to help out some poor merchants, head on over to Jensine's "Good as New" Merchandise. She'll fill you in with the details."
Tertullian Verus: "He is dirty. Plain and simple. I don't trust him at all. Won't even come to merchant meetings and sets his prices so low, he undercuts everyone. If you want to give me a hand, go speak with Jensine at her Good as New Merchandise store. She can clue you in and maybe offer some coin."

Jensine will be only too happy to confirm:

"Feel free to browse, friend. It's nice to see a new shopper. I was afraid I lost any hope of new business ever since Thoronir opened up."
"Everything was fine until Thoronir opened his shop nearby. Selling all sorts of merchandise, he undercuts prices like you wouldn't believe. He doesn't always sell what we sell, but it is still a problem. People who buy tend to want to spend their money there. That leaves none for us. It's getting so bad, a few of us may have to close up shop. He outright refuses to join the Society or even discuss the matter. We are convinced he is up to no good. What we need is for you to case his establishment, and figure out where he gets his inventory. Find some proof of his wrongdoing, and let us know."
Inventory
"His inventory must be stolen. It has to be. He prices less than it costs to make some of those things. Go see for yourself."

When you start to investigate on the merchant's behalf, you can ask Thoronir some pointed questions:

Inventory
"What about my inventory?"
Where do you get it?
"Well, that would be a trade secret. I can't divulge how I pass the great savings on to you, now can I? Just like a baker not revealing his best recipes, I must keep my sources anonymous or every merchant in town would use them. Suffice to say, they are quite reliable and low cost. That way, you walk out with a full coinpurse!"
Very nice selection, Thoronir.
"Well thank you! It's not only a fine assortment of goods, but a bit of a treasure trove; you never know what I'll have in stock. I can see by the look on your face you wonder where I get all these fantastic items. I'll tell you what I tell everyone else who asks. It's all about who you know. My sources are good, but they are secret. Anyway, have fun looking around, and when you are ready to buy, give me a shout."
I think it's stolen.
"You have some nerve! Where do you come off accusing me of something you know nothing about? Now, either buy something or get out."

Note that the second choice will also net you a 10 point disposition increase, while the third results in a 20 point disposition decrease. At this point, if you approach him he will say:

"Hello again."

Depending on whether you are in his shop or not, he will then greet you with:

"Welcome back."
"Why are you following me? Please... go away. I'm quite busy."

Similarly he will end conversation with either:

"Goodbye. Hope to see you again very soon."
"Please, I'm very busy."

If you return to Jensine, now she will sigh:

Thoronir
"I told you he wouldn't cooperate. Your best bet is to shadow him and see where he goes."

To look into Thoronir's inventory further, you will thus need to follow him and overhear a shady conversation he has with Agarmir. At this stage of the quest, Thoronir will keep following his regular schedule but will break it off at 11pm to secretly meet up with his questionable supplier in the backyard behind his store. The two of them will stay in the backyard all night before returning to their regular schedules at 7am.

During this conversation, they will discuss the newest shipment:
Thoronir: "That you, Agarmir?"
Agarmir: "Shhhh, not so loud. How many time have I told you that?"
Thoronir: "Sorry, I am not used to this kind of meeting. It always makes me nervous."
Agarmir: "Well, just shut up and listen to me. The next shipment will be sooner than I expected. Just have the money ready."
Thoronir: "Same assortment of things? I mean, I have enough clothing for now."
Agarmir: "You take what I get. I get notice at the last second, and I have to jump on it. No time to be picky about it."
Thoronir: "Well, that Society is putting more pressure on me. So maybe we better cut back for a while."
Agarmir: "You cut back now, and I'm going to take my business elsewhere. Or maybe pay a visit to that Jensine and tell her about your little scheme."
Thoronir: "Fine. You made your point. Contact me when you have the items, and we'll meet again."
Agarmir: "Don't worry, it will be very soon. Now get outta' here."

Once you break into Agarmir's basement and discover that Thoronir's merchandise appears to be taken from the dead, you can speak to him about it. However, he will be disbelieving if you confront him without having the Macabre Manifest with you:

Taken from the Dead
"Are you implying that my merchandise comes from the deceased? Your story is ridiculous. This sounds like some lie created by Jensine and her damned "society" to have me run out of town. Please... if you don't want to buy something, then just leave. Your wild accusations are upsetting me."

When leaving conversation he will re-iterate:

"I will not accept your accusations without evidence."

Return to him with the manifest and he will suddenly change his tune:

Taken from the Dead
"I... can't believe what I'm seeing in this book. I'm mortified. To think these things here were once on the bodies of the recently deceased. It's just too horrible to comprehend. I don't even know what to say. I guess an apology is not enough. What can I do?"
Help me catch Agarmir.
"Yes! That's the least I can do. First and foremost, I will never meet with him again. I can promise you that. Secondly, I remember him mentioning a place he had to be this very day. Ummm... yes. That's right. He said that he wouldn't be able to do anything else, as he had something important to do. You don't think he would dig up another... oh no, he wouldn't. But I guess he has been. Oh my. What have I done?"
Don't worry, I'll stop him.
"Yes, you do that. And in the meantime, I'll decide what to do with all of these ill-gotten things. I'm so sorry."

If you ask him about his inventory again, he will say:

Inventory
"I don't even want to look at it for another moment..."
Taken from the Dead
"I hope everyone can forgive me for not doing a better job checking up on my sources."

He will bid you farewell with a plea:

"I hope you can forgive me. I had no idea."

Speaking to Jensine now will have her comment:

Thoronir
"Thoronir better pray he had no knowledge of Agarmir's grave robbing, or the Watch will have his head."

If you speak to him again, he will open with:

"Glad to see you are well."
"Were you able to stop Agarmir?"
Not yet.
"You must hurry. We cannot let him do this horrible task any longer."

If you return once you have slain Agarmir but without his shovel, he will say:

"I don't think you have the proof we need to lock this crime down and point the blame at Agarmir. You better go back and check."

On leaving you he will say once more:

"We need one more piece of evidence to make Agarmir's guilt complete."

If you return with the shovel, he will be delighted:

Yes, here is his shovel.
"Then we can at last rest. I feared had he somehow bested you, I'd be next. It is fortunate that your skills exceeded his. I've come to some decisions. I intend to donate all of the money I have made, as well as what is left of these stolen items to the temple. I also want you to know that I had a long discussion with Jensine, and I have decided to join the Society. I realize you risked your life to give me a chance, and Thoronir never forgets things like that. Accept this ring as a humble reward. It's the least I can do to say thank you. Now, don't be a stranger! The Copious Coinpurse is still in business."
Inventory
"I have disposed of all of my ill-gotten merchandise, and replaced it with more expensive, but carefully obtained items."

He will part ways with the following:

"You've shown me mercy. I won't forget that. Thank you."

Jensine will confirm Thoronir's story:

Thoronir
"In your absence, Thoronir visited and we spoke at length about his role in this scheme. I believe him when he says he didn't know Agarmir's sources. He told me of his intentions to donate all of the money and inventory to the local temple. He also agreed to buy and sell merchandise at fair prices. Last but not least, he's officially joined the Society. I am taken aback by his honest intentions. In return, the Society has decided not to press charges. His name will be absconded from the records of this crime."
Inventory
"I am pleased that Thoronir has decided to donate his inventory to the temple. At least he is trying to make amends."

If you visit him again after the quest, he will greet you with:

"Hello, my friend."
"It is good to see you again."

He will take his leave with:

"Please, return soon. It's always a pleasure to see you."

With his name cleared, the other merchants will now be more complimentary about him:

Claudette Perrick: "Thoronir didn't turn out to be such a bad fellow after all. I'm glad he decided to join the Society."
Jensine: "I'm mature enough to admit I was mistaken about Thoronir. He's a welcome member of our group in the Market District."
Ogier Georick: "Well... maybe Thoronir wasn't responsible for digging up those corpses, but good riddance to his insane prices. Nice job."

Unused Dialogue[edit]

  • Thoronir has two lines for when he first met you that you will never hear, as they are overridden by others:
"Welcome to The Copious Coinpurse!"
"Thoronir welcomes you to The Copious Coinpurse. Such a pleasure. How can I serve you?"
  • There is also an additional line for the Taken from the Dead topic which you will never hear as the quest updates before you have a chance to ask him:
"You just take care of Agarmir, and I will be sure these things are disposed of properly."
