The Mage's Staff is a realm that is associated with the Celestial Mage's Staff. In 2E 582[verification needed] the Mage constellation disappeared from the sky, and with it the Staff fell on Nirn, shattering into onyx shards that began to emit elemental surges of magic.[1][2] The area of magical contamination around the black pillar became known as the Spellscar. The Mage's Staff was the name of the largest obelisk and the plane inside of it that was releasing all the magic.[3]
The plane consists of floating onyx rock platforms intertwined with roots and magical bridges seldomly connecting them, and elemental outbursts that fill the air. Similar to what the Mage's violent outbursts warped the Aetherian Archive upper levels into,[4] the Staff's instabilities seem to be caused by the unstable core of the realm, which releases dangerous amounts of magicka.[3]
Many atronachs roam the plane, seemingly summoned by the elemental storms. Magic-addicted spellfiends have managed to enter the realm,[3] even though it is dangerous for mortals to come close to such extraplanar stresses.[5] The Staff's sole guardian, an aspect of the Celestial Mage named Zozubeth, furiously defended the plane from the Serpent's influences by attacking anyone who enters.[6]
It was investigated by Sara Benele, a member of the Mages Guild, accompanied by the Vestige who helped her manage the potential threat. The crystal was emitting magical energy at dangerous levels, and if left unchecked, it would have caused an explosion. After finding a way inside, they ventured through the realm, reached the core, disconnected the crystal, and sealed it, preventing the impending disaster.[3][1]
